Complicated Emergencies Advanced Rescue Problem Solving Workshop
Does your department already perform confined space, rope rescue, or fall protection operations, but want to better prepare for equipment failure, edge complications, and non-routine rescue conditions? Are your members comfortable with standard systems but lack experience adapting when things don’t go as planned? If so, this workshop is for you.
This one-day advanced workshop is designed for experienced responders and focuses on real-world rescue problem-solving under failure conditions. Students will work through instructor-driven scenarios that require dynamic hazard assessment, system adaptation, and coordinated team movement when ideal equipment or configurations are unavailable.
Subjects Covered
- Tripod collapse over a confined space, constructing a secondary tripod over the failed system and executing a controlled live-load system transfer while maintaining redundancy.
- Tripod collapse over a leading edge, including edge protection and load management considerations.
- Sideways offset A-Frame construction for efficient edge transition of a victim and rescuer using a litter basket.
- Negative edge transitions without an artificial high directional (AHD), including rescuer rope-to-rope transfer from the litterbasket to assist with edge operations.
- Rescue complications involving suspended workers on self-retracting lifelines (SRLs), including system conversion.
Emphasis is placed on maintaining redundancy, managing live loads, and making sound decisions consistent with OSHA expectations and NFPA 1006 technical rescue principles.
This workshop is 90% hands-on / practical skills, with minimal classroom time and a strong focus on applied techniques and decision-making.
